At last. To me, the debut issue of CALL FROM THE GRAVE feels like the end of a long, long journey. Something that I've been after for a good while.
It is a fanzine like no other in that it remorselessly focuses on ideology and spirituality in interviews. The invisible world is discussed with NECROS CHRISTOS, WATAIN, COMMUNION, INQUISITION, ASCENSION, MGLA, GRIFTEGÅRD, ALCEST, Ajna and yours truly. I think Aaron Woodall, the editor, has selected very carefully who he wanted to talked to. It's not about supporting bands, or worse the scene, it's about where these artists are coming from. What is the source of their zest.
There's been some fuss over the fact that Aaron is a "follower of Jesus Christ" (his words). I have got a couple of e-mails myself regarding my participation in CFTG. How narrowly can your eyelids be open? To me, this is more alarming and sad than anything else. That a man of faith has been able to create such an insightful read while hundreds and hundreds of "Black Metallists" have brought us nothing but meaningless fanzines that talk about everything but the spiritual essence of Black Metal.
If you cannot live with the fact that Aaron is a Christian and choose to ignore this zine, the loss is definitely yours. I should also mention the extraordinary work done with the layout conjuring a truly medieval and grimoiresque feel to the whole affair.
